Jess - brand photographer from Blackbird Creative

Hello! I’m Jessica, Founder of Blackbird Creative.

These days, the need for having an online presence in order to be discovered is inescapable. But with so many other demands on small business owners, marketing can often take a back seat — and that’s where I come in!

My journey to get to where I am now as a brand photographer has not been a linear path, it's been more like a scribble from my 3 year old! I have had 17 jobs, attended 5 years of university, received many certificates and 1 bachelors degree and started 3 businesses to bring me to where I am today.

In 2019 I decided I did not want to go back to my job after having my son Eli. Screw pension and benefits I wanted to follow my dreams of being self employed and creative! This was so freeing but also terrifying because my husband is also self employed.

I started managing social media for a number of clients, it was rewarding and I enjoyed it but what I enjoyed most was taking photos of my clients and their products for their socials. I quickly bought a proper camera, took an amazing course and learned sooo much about cameras and photography, and starting doing more photos for any brand that would take me.

In December 2022 I finished my last social media contract and have been doing full time brand photography since and couldn’t be happier!

With a keen eye for building unique visual concepts, I deliver creative strategies that help businesses make big waves in their communities. My greatest joy is hearing clients share how their recognition, sales, and customer engagement has been positively impacted as a result of my brand photography.

Wondering what’s been keeping me busy these days? Take a peek at my Portfolio Page for the inside scoop.

What’s in a name?

The “Blackbird” in Blackbird Creative stems from my Grandads tradition of calling out “blackbird!” at the dinner table to create distraction and claim the food on someone else’s plate. Blackbird was his way of turning a mundane ritual into something playful and spirited — a beautiful principle that I’ve carried on in life and in business.

*I also have a tattoo on my foot with 2 blackbirds in memory of my Grannie and Grandad.
